Amherst Railway Society Train Show

One of these years I’m going to make it up to the Amherst Railway Society Train Show in West Springfield, MA.  This year’s show is running from 1/24 to 1/25.  It’s a huge show that always gets good reviews on the O Gauge forums.  MassLive.com ran an article about the show that you can read here.  For more info and directions go to http://www.railroadhobbyshow.com/.

My Visit to the “World’s Greatest Hobby” Show

A module on the East Penn Traction Club layout. Click to enlarge.
The World's Greatest Hobby Tour
made a stop in the Philadelphia area the weekend of 1/3/09 and my son
and I attended the Saturday session of the show.  Here are my thoughts:

  • The attendance was great!  I was pleasantly surprised by the number of
people at the show when I arrived around 12:30 pm.  There were plenty
of families with small children taking in the large number of modular
layouts in all scales that were on display.

Extreme Trains

The History Channel is running a fantastic series called Extreme Trains.  It is by far the best series on trains made to date.  The host of the show, Matt Bown, is a young railroader and his enthusiasm for trains makes the show that much better.  The show is running on the History Channel and the History Channel HD.  New Episodes of Extreme Trains are shown on Tuesdays at 10:00 pm and according to the History Channel website new episodes started on 11/11/08 and will run through 12/30/08.  Set you VCR or DVR so you don't miss a great show!  Episodes are also available on DVD and would make a great Christmas gift.

Finding Train Shows, Displays and Train Shops

It’s model train season and there are plenty of shows and displays scheduled across the country throughout the winter months.  The following sites are a great source for finding events.

Trains.com Events Calendar - Search listings by zip, state.
O Gauge Railroading Magazine - Events listed by date.
Great Train Expo - Shows listed by date.
Little Toy Trains - Events listed by date and state.

If you’re looking to visit a train shop in another area during your holiday travels check out this site from MapMuse.  I’ve posted about it before and mention it again because it’s a great site that enables you to search for shops by region, metro area, address, city, state or zip.
