O Gauge Layout Plans - 5′ x 9′ Double Track Plans for Lionel FasTrack
The next track plans feaured in the OGaugeWatch.com Layout Plan series are a pair of double track layouts for a 5′ by 9′ space. Both plans are a tight fit for a 5′ x 9′ train platform so a 5′6″ x 9′6″ platform is recommended. Double track plans are great for two train operation using Lionel’s Classic Command Control or Legacy systems or by powering the inner and outer loops with two separate conventional transformers.
All of the curves used in both double track plans are O36, the same radius curve included with FasTrack starter sets. The inner and outer main lines in both plans are connected with O60 remote switches and need to be isolated by the 1.375 inch track sections (highlighted in GREEN) which are included with the turnouts.
The 5′ x 9′ Double Track Version 1 plan incorporates a pair of Lionel Grade Crossing with Flashers (product # 6-12052) and a reverse loop into the design. The flashers add some realism while the reverse loop enables trains on the inner loop to change direction. There’s a nice space within the inner loop for a small town with the main street traversing the double tracks at the grade crossings.
To install the grade crossings the curves highlighted in BLUE will need to have the metal joiners under the roadbed removed (connecting the two outer rails together) so the special 5″ pieces included with the grade crossing can trigger the flashers correctly. The PURPLE highlighted curves will also need to have the metal joiners removed. In addition, one outer rail will need to be cut with a Dremel tool to create a substitute for the special 5″ pieces included with the flasher track that are omitted from the inner loop.
The 5′ x 9′ Double Track Version 2 plan includes a double reverse loop on the inner loop similar to the Figure 8 Plus plan making it a great upgrade choice for those that built the Figure 8 Plus. There’s also a long siding on the inner loop which is perfect for storing freight cars. The siding can be electrically isolated by using a Dremel tool to cut the center rail of the track section highlighted in RED so a complete train can be stored.
Space for buildings or scenery is limited on this plan but a few well placed buildings will add to the operating action this plan provides.
