Lionel’s New Grand Central Terminal

In their new 2009 Signature Catalog Lionel is offering up a limited edition model of New York’s Grand Central Terminal.  It is a great piece (one of my favorites in the new catalog) and has a lofty list price of $1.499.  The firm that designed the piece for Lionel is TW Design of Dallas, TX.  TW Design released a video on YouTube showing an abbreviated look at some behind the scenes action with commentary of how the piece was designed.  Check it out below:

To expensive for the average modeler, if not to true “O” scale then what’s the point. Got to do better than this.

I agree about the price. I do like that the piece captures the essence of the real Grand Central Terminal.

I am thinking of betting this station. I mix scale engines, rolling stock, signals, lighting and some scale buildings with a Tinplate #840 powerhouse, Hellgate bridge, Lionel Irvington factory, #116 station (which I think looks more like a bank than a station) and at least 6 #94 Tinplate light towers.
Has anybody seen the original? What do you think?
Does anybody have an opinion about the manufacturer?
I know it is quite expensive (the price of a articulated steamer from MTH Premier) but if done well, it might be a very dramatic centerpiece to my 28 by 16 L shaped passenger oriented layout.
I disagree that a representational model is inferior to a scale model. This model is larger than the #840 tinplate powerhouse. If it were truly scale, it would be colossal and overly dominate even most very large layouts.

Comments Please

$1,500 for a model building? Not this kid.

I like it–just gotta figure out how to make it look right with my SP stuff…..BTW There are now only 249 left.

Do you have any Lionel Grand Central Stations for sale? If so at what price? Thank you. Dick
