Lionel Announces UP Heritage Collection
Yesterday, Lionel announced in a press release that they will produce an "officially licensed" version of Union Pacific’s Heritage Locomotive series. The series consists of 6 locomotives decorated in paint schemes from the fallen flag railroads Union Pacific has acquired over the years. Lionel also announced a Lionel/Union Pacific joint release of a 7th paint scheme sometime in 2008.

The models will include certificates of authenticity signed by the
Lionel and UP CEO’s and an EMD builders plate. The new locos will retail
for $449.99 and be equipped with the TMCCII Legacy system.
Back in September, Lionel’s Jerry Calabrese announced that Lionel had reached a settlement with Union Pacific concerning trademark infringement. At the Fall ‘06 TCA open house, Lionel representatives announced
their plans to produce the UP Heritage series locomotives and hinted at
a surprise announcement resulting from the new trademark agreement. My guess is
the announcement of the 7th paint scheme is the surprise.
Since MTH is also producing the UP Heritage series locomotives but
has not settled it’s trademark infringement with Union Pacific, my
guess is that the 7th paint scheme will somehow incorporate the Lionel
logo to prevent MTH from reproducing the model and to demonstrate that
having a trademark agreement with Union Pacific has advantages. You
have to admit, it would be cool to see a full size locomotive with
Lionel markings.
