TCA Fall ‘06 Open House - Recap Part 2
Sunset Models/3rd Rail and Weaver Models presentations were good but they didn’t compare to the excitement generated by Mike Wolf, owner of MTH. Mike started off by announcing that the 2007 Volume 1 O Gauge catalog was the best MTH has produced and the Tinplate catalog is the largest tin plate catalog MTH has produced.
Shortly thereafter Mike and the crowd turned their attention to the pre-production model of the Coors Light locomotive.

The cover of the 2007 Volume 1 catalog is adorned with a picture of the Coors Light train. Mike had a pre-production model of the loco on hand and it looked very cool. The Coors Light loco is a crazy 6-1-0 configuration that looks just like the loco in the commercials. Mike indicated that pre-orders for the train have far exceeded expectations so he expects that it will be a huge success.
The Coors Light engine will "communicate" with the freight cars on the train (which are equipped with DCS) and open up the doors of the freight cars when the train stops (and enters into station announcement mode). Smoke will pour out of the doors simulating the cold fog that is seen in the commercials. A blue LED will light up inside the cars to turn the cold fog blue. Placing DCS in freight cars is new technology for MTH and they plan to feature it in other offerings. MTH hopes to ship the Coors train by the ‘07 Super Bowl. Sounds will be ProtoSound 2.0 and will include some of the commercials. MTH is working to include the "Love Train" song in the sound library as the bell. By the way, the big wheel on the loco does not power the locomotive, the power will come from the front wheels of the engine. Mike indicated that work on the Coors set started in May of ‘06.
Other highlights:
- 7 new set celebrating the Union Pacific Heritage locomotives. Each set will consist of the locomotive, a high cube boxcar and a caboose. Dummy locos will not be produced because UP only produced one of each of the Heritage locomotives. The 7 sets will be shipped one per month. No word on when they will start shipping. The will work on O-42 curves.
- SD70ACE in BNSF livery and others will ship in 2 to 3 weeks.
- SD50 with 3 rail/2 rail capabilities have shipped.
- MTH is upgrading details in all scale Premier items.
- Mike showed the new FF1 (O-72 radius).
- MTH has built a new Standard Gauge layout that will be at the Fall York show.
- MTH Standard Gauge monorails will ship soon.
- Premier passenger cars now include passengers in the cars.
- HO K-4 sold more than expected. Model Railroad News gave it a great review. MTH is currently developing a diesel, another steam engine and freight car.
