OGaugeWatch.com Poll Results - August ‘06
The four OGaugeWatch.com poll questions for August ‘06 focused on reader’s length of active involvement in model railroading, when they were introduced to it, the manufacturer of their first O Gauge train set and whether or not they still have their first set.
For the first question, "How long have you been involved in the model train hobby?", 44.6% of the participants responded they have been active in the hobby for more than 20 years.
For question #2, "When were you first introduced to model trains?",

over 92% responded they were introduced to model trains as a child. No
surprise here and, in my opinion, confirms the thinking that the future
of the hobby lies in the hands of those active in the hobby today. I
think it is vital for today’s model train enthusiasts to get the
youngsters of today involved so they will come back to the hobby later
when they have the time and cash to spend.
Question #3, "What was the manufacturer of your first O Gauge train set?". Over 71% answered Lionel and only 7.7% said MTH. Again, results you would expect, given the strength of the Lionel brand over MTH. It will be interesting to see the results of this question when the next generation starts buying starter sets for their youngsters. Overcoming the Lionel legacy in the minds of first time buyers will be an almost impossible task for MTH.
Question #4, "Do you still have your first O Gauge train set"? 69.4% answered Yes, 31.6% No. I wasn’t sure what to expect here but I can guarantee that almost all of the 31.6% are very disappointed their first set is history.
